A new barrier-free heavy goods vehicle toll system in Spain

Kapsch TrafficCom AG recently put a barrier-free toll system for heavy goods vehicles into operation in Spain. Launched on 1 July, the system has already processed more than 1.4 million transactions per day in the province of Biscay. The installation, which was awarded to Kapsch TrafficCom in 2022 by Interbiak, comprises 26 gantries covering 146 lanes.

This smart toll is deployed on the major roads A-8, N-636 and N-637 in northern Spain. A maintenance contract is in place until 2026, ensuring level 2 and 3 maintenance. The addition of 3 roadside units strengthens the C-ITS corridor, increasing safety and traffic efficiency.

The project overcame significant challenges, including the installation on the Rontegi Bridge. This bridge, crucial to the local road network, saw the assembly of a gantry of more than 40 metres, without lane closures, under the experienced eyes of Javier Aguirre, General Manager for Spain and Portugal.
