AARC Advocates for the Introduction of the SOAR Act in the House of Representatives
The American Association For Respiratory Care (AARC) has announced the introduction of the Supplemental Oxygen Access Reform (SOAR) Act of 2024 in the U.S. House of Representatives. Spearheaded by Representatives David Valadao (R-CA), Larry Bucshon, MD (R-IN), Adrian Smith (R-NE), and Julia Brownley (D-CA), the bill mirrors Senate efforts to improve access to supplemental oxygen for Medicare beneficiaries. The proposed legislation aims to revise payment methods for liquid oxygen and enhance patient access to respiratory therapists.
Over 1.5 million people in the U.S. struggle to obtain crucial oxygen therapy, primarily due to an insufficient Medicare reimbursement system and limited access to qualified respiratory therapists. The AARC has been instrumental in pushing for this legislation, leveraging its network to advocate for oxygen reform during its annual Respiratory Care Washington, DC Fly-In. The organization’s efforts include collaborations with a variety of patient groups, providers, and industry representatives.
AARC leaders, including President Carl Hinkson, emphasize that the SOAR Act not only aims to address financial and logistical barriers to oxygen therapy but also recognizes the vital role of respiratory therapists in ensuring high-quality patient care. The AARC remains optimistic about the legislation’s potential to significantly improve the health and quality of life for individuals reliant on supplemental oxygen.
