AI-capable Supercomputer 'ELBJUWEL' to be Built in Saxony
ParTec AG and Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf have signed a memorandum of understanding to build and operate a powerful AI supercomputer named 'ELBJUWEL' in Saxony. This initiative is expected to enhance AI technology development for scientific and economic purposes in Germany. 'ELBJUWEL' will have up to 500 petaflops or about 50 exaflops 8FP, placing it among the world's most powerful AI computers.
The project aims to provide domestic access to advanced AI capabilities, reducing reliance on international cloud services. It will create a platform specializing in AI, machine learning, high-performance, and quantum computing. This infrastructure intends to foster cooperation among science, industry, and government in tackling complex projects, promoting innovation, and boosting the competitiveness of Saxony-based enterprises.
Cooperation is deemed crucial, as emphasized by Bernd Frohwitter, CEO of ParTec AG, highlighting the importance of Europe’s AI sovereignty. The establishment of this supercomputer is a significant step towards providing reliable and secure computing power, particularly in the context of filling the current gap in local AI infrastructure.
