AMPERA Submits Regulatory Plan for Advanced Nuclear Technology

Advanced nuclear company AMPERA has submitted a Regulatory Engagement Plan to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) as part of its pre-application process. The plan, submitted on October 5, 2026, aims to facilitate the licensing of a combined manufacturing and fuel fabrication facility by October 2027. This move aligns with the NRC's Office of Advanced Reactors, which supports advanced reactor technologies' safe deployment.

AMPERA's plan integrates reactor licensing under various regulations to support nuclear material activities. It also anticipates changes in the regulatory space for advanced microreactor technology, offering flexibility for commercialization. The company's thorium-based systems use an external neutron generator, providing enhanced operational control.

AMPERA is collaborating with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory for fuel development and has appointed Michael Hamer as Director of Licensing & Regulatory Affairs. Hamer's 25-year experience strengthens AMPERA's "PowerNOW. NuclearNEXT." platform. This submission marks a significant step for AMPERA in advancing microreactor technology.
