Plug-in hybrids on the rise in the Swiss car market
In August 2025, the Swiss and Liechtenstein passenger car market recorded 16,136 new registrations, an increase of 1.3% compared to 2024. Despite a decline in cumulative sales of 4.3% since the beginning of the year, plug-in hybrid vehicles are attracting growing interest, representing 12.3% of new registrations.
The share of 100% electric vehicles decreased slightly, reaching 20.2%. In total, 32.5% of new cars sold are plug-in vehicles. However, the Confederation's target of 50% by 2025 remains a long way off. Importers risk penalties, prompting a relaxation of tax measures.
In this context, auto-suisse is calling for a reduction in the tax burden on the automotive sector, believing that current charges far exceed the costs generated.
