Commerzbank Demonstrates Resilience in EBA Stress Test
Commerzbank has showcased its resilience in the latest European Banking Authority (EBA) stress test, improving its results from 2023. The bank's CET1 ratio decreased by 412 basis points to 9.6% under adverse conditions compared to a 464 basis point drop in 2023. These results reflect Commerzbank's ability to withstand economic challenges, such as a major recession and increased inflation due to energy price shocks.
Bernd Spalt, Chief Risk Officer, highlighted the bank's robust performance amidst global uncertainties, stating, "Our customers can rely on us even in challenging times." The stress test results contribute to the Supervisory Review and Evaluation Process.
The adverse scenario considered potential impacts on Germany's export-heavy economy due to a severe recession and inflationary pressures, resulting in a GDP decline of 7.5% over the period from 2025 to 2027. The stress test did not take current or future business strategies into account, focusing solely on existing financial figures.
