Energiekontor Initiates Major Wind Park Repowering in Würselen, Enhancing Renewables Capacity
Energiekontor AG announced the commencement of construction for a significant repowering project in Würselen, located in the Aachen district, North Rhine-Westphalia. The project will replace three older turbines with new, higher-capacity models, promising substantial boosts in energy output and environmental benefits.
After obtaining the building permit in autumn 2023 and succeeding in the November renewables tender, the Würselen project has moved forward to the financial close. The project will feature three Vestas turbines, each with a capacity of 6.0 megawatts, set to more than quadruple the site's total output to about 18 megawatts. This upgrade will increase the annual electricity yield to over 41 million kilowatt-hours, sufficient to power approximately 12,500 households and reduce CO2 emissions by over 31,000 tonnes each year.
The replacement turbines, V150 models, possess a rotor diameter of roughly 150 meters and a hub height of about 125 meters. These will be constructed in a historical coal mining region, showcasing a significant shift towards sustainable energy solutions in the area.
Peter Szabo, CEO of Energiekontor AG, highlighted the project as a testament to the company's repowering expertise and its commitment to expanding renewable energy capacities within Germany. This project, along with others, is expected to strategically bolster the company's asset portfolio and support continued sustainable growth.
