ENGIE has initiated the commercial operation of BESS Coya, marking the inception of Latin America's largest battery energy storage system as approved by the National Electricity Coordinator (CEN). Encompassing a storage capability of 638 MWh along with an installed capacity of 139 MW, BESS Coya utilizes lithium battery technology. This system is co-located with the Coya PV solar plant in Chile's Antofagasta Region, boasting 180 MWac of renewable energy generation capacity.

BESS Coya is designed to significantly contribute to grid stability and environmental sustainability. It is capable of storing and delivering five hours of electricity during peak periods, equating to an average annual supply of 200 GWh. Importantly, this green energy can support approximately 100,000 homes and prevent 65,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually. This aligns with ENGIE's broader goal of achieving 10 GW of installed battery storage capacity by 2030, as shared by ENGIE Senior Executive Vice President Paulo Almirante. This move underscores ENGIE's dedication to fostering renewable energy integration and accelerating the energy transition through advanced storage solutions.
