EU Supports Thyssenkrupp Nucera's SOEC Technology for Green Hydrogen Production
The European Union has endorsed Thyssenkrupp Nucera's Solid Oxide Electrolyzer Cell (SOEC) project with significant funding. This funding, which could reach EUR 36 million, is designated for constructing a 300MW plant leveraging high-temperature electrolysis technology for green hydrogen production.
The financial backing represents a critical step toward commercializing SOEC technology, initially licensed from Fraunhofer IKTS. The groundbreaking technology promises to enhance energy efficiency and cost advantages in hydrogen production, strengthening Thyssenkrupp Nucera's industrial hydrogen portfolio.
To prepare for the large-scale production facility, a pilot plant with 8MW capacity will be operational by mid-2025, focusing on producing electrolyzer stacks—key components in this innovative system. This development marks an essential stride toward reducing industrial electricity usage and fostering decarbonization.
