Fenimore Art Museum Completes $33.8M Acquisition of American Artworks
Fenimore Art Museum in Cooperstown, NY, has finalized the acquisition and installation of 27 major American artworks valued at $33.8 million. This collection includes oil paintings and pastels by prominent artists such as Mary Cassatt, William Merritt Chase, and Georgia O'Keeffe, among others.
The last two pieces, both pastels by James McNeill Whistler and Max Weber, were recently installed and are on display until December 29, 2024, in the "American Masterworks" exhibition. Funded by the Eugene V. and Clare E. Thaw Charitable Trust, this acquisition aims to expand the museum's significant collection, covering works from the 1850s to the 1930s.
"With these new acquisitions, Fenimore showcases a comprehensive collection of American art by master artists," said Dr. Paul S. D'Ambrosio, President and CEO of Fenimore Art Museum. The new works complement the earlier 19th-century pieces and the Eugene and Clare Thaw Collection of American Indian Art.
Fenimore Art Museum plans to feature the painting "Madame de Fleury and Her Child" by Mary Cassatt in its upcoming 2025 exhibition, "Mary Cassatt / Berthe Morisot: Allies in Impressionism."
