Fencing Federation Wins Legal Battle Against Reuters
The International Fencing Federation (FIE) has successfully challenged Reuters in a German appellate court in Hamburg. The court ruled on July 23, 2026, that Reuters cannot disseminate unproven claims made in a May 5, 2026 report. This report suggested that nearly 3,000 athletes and coaches signed an open letter expressing concerns over FIE's leadership. The court found the statement misleading, citing lack of verification on signatories' identities.
The misrepresentations led to the ruling of a preliminary injunction barring Reuters from repeating this claim, with fines up to €250,000 per violation. Reuters has since corrected the article, acknowledging the inaccuracy and the absence of independent verification of signatures.
The FIE highlighted the campaign's reliance on unverified and potentially manipulated data. Interim President Abdelmoneim El Husseiny criticized Reuters for amplifying unsupported claims, impacting the FIE's reputation. The court reaffirmed the importance of factual integrity, emphasizing that dissemination of untrue claims should not occur.
