GSMA Report Highlights Need for Renewable Energy in Mobile Industry's Net Zero Goals
The GSMA's recent report emphasizes the mobile industry's significant strides in reducing carbon emissions, achieving a 13% reduction since 2019. Despite a 10% rise in mobile connections and a quadrupling of data traffic, the sector managed these cuts. However, the report stresses the importance of accelerating access to renewable energy, especially in emerging markets, to meet climate targets by 2050.
Renewable energy is identified as the chief contributor to reducing emissions. In 2024, operators used approximately 70 TWh of renewable electricity, equating to Indonesia's total renewable generation. The share of renewable energy in operator electricity more than doubled from 10% in 2019 to 24% in 2024.
John Giusti, GSMA's Chief Regulatory Officer, underscores the link between economic growth and climate action, urging policymakers to enhance conditions for renewable energy investment.
