AI Technology Aids in Protection of Chinese White Dolphins
Huawei and its partners have announced initial success in using an AI-powered solution to protect Chinese white dolphins in Xiamen Bay. This effort is part of Huawei's TECH4ALL initiative and started three months ago. The technology has identified 13 dolphins and achieved over 90% identification accuracy, enhancing law enforcement response time by 65% against infractions in protected areas.
The AI system uses data-driven insights, which assist conservationists in devising targeted protection strategies. Major threats to the dolphins include shipping and habitat loss. The system's data processing capabilities have increased labeling efficiency by 400% and cover a 330-square-kilometer area with a 5G-A network.
Efforts to protect the dolphins are critical, as they play a vital role in marine ecosystems and the carbon cycle. The next decade poses significant challenges for the species' growth. With AI and ongoing research, the project's results bring hope for these dolphins' survival.
