IRENA and Canadian G7 Presidency Drive Digital Power System Transformation
The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) has released a report highlighting the pivotal role digitalisation and AI can play in transforming global power systems. Unveiled during the G7 Energy and Environment Ministers' Meeting, the report showcases digitalisation's ability to slash electricity costs, enhance energy security, and integrate low-cost renewables.
The report recommends G7 policymakers focus on five areas: monitoring, forecasting, operational optimisation, end-use automation, and transparency. It stresses the importance of strengthening data systems, addressing digital skills gaps, and boosting energy investment especially in developing economies.
Canada's Energy Minister, Tim Hodgson, emphasised the importance of leveraging digital solutions to secure and innovate the energy sector. With electricity set to power over half of global energy by 2050, IRENA's Director-General, Francesco La Camera, highlighted the necessity of reliability, affordability, and security in this transition.
