UN Releases Guide to Manage AI in Smart Cities

The United Nations has introduced a system-wide toolbox aimed at ensuring human accountability for AI decisions in smart cities. Launched by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and UN-Habitat, the resource aids city officials in effectively integrating AI in public services while maintaining human rights and data privacy.

AI's role in city operations, from chatbots to administrative software, promises improved services but poses risks of bias. The 'Toolbox for People-Centred Smart Cities in the AI Era' offers guidance on deciding AI's role in urban settings, identifying when not to use technology, and maintaining human oversight.

This launch coincides with the 10th anniversary of the United for Smart Sustainable Cities initiative, enhancing global cooperation. The toolbox and accompanying publications aim to guide cities on sustainable digital transformations, aligning with the UN's development goals.
