Paris, May 21, 2024 – Mersen, a global expert in electrical power and advanced materials, has achieved a significant milestone by delivering the fifth and final blank mirror for the European Southern Observatory's (ESO) Extremely Large Telescope (ELT). Built on the Cerro Armazones mountain in northern Chile, the ELT features a primary mirror measuring 39 meters in diameter and will advance research in stellar archaeology and exoplanet detection.

Mersen's M5 blank mirror comprises six silicon carbide petals coated with Mersen SiC CVD. This lightweight, stiff material, with exceptional thermomechanical properties, helps stabilize the telescope's images. The mirror will vibrate on actuators to correct disturbances caused by wind and atmospheric turbulence.

Luc Themelin, CEO of Mersen, expressed pride in the team's expertise and collaboration, emphasizing the project's role in pushing the boundaries of knowledge about galaxies and the universe.
