Merus Power Launches First Grid-Forming Energy Storage in Nordics

Merus Power has launched the first grid-forming battery energy storage system (BESS) in the Nordic region, marking a significant milestone in energy technology. This 30 MW/36 MWh system, commissioned in Finland for Swiss company Alpiq, meets the requirements set by Fingrid, Finland's transmission system operator. The technology, verified through simulations and field tests, underscores the system's ability to independently support the power grid during disturbances.

This grid-forming BESS allows for the maintenance of voltage and frequency, crucial for grid stability and the integration of renewable energy. Unlike traditional systems, it can establish grid voltage independently, playing a pivotal role in expanding renewable energy capacity.

Developed in just two years after the release of regulatory requirements, this project highlights the rapid advancement and the strategic importance of energy storage systems in transitioning to a sustainable power grid. The collaboration between Merus Power and Alpiq also emphasizes innovation in accelerating the green transition.
