National Alliance on Mental Illness Introduces Schizophrenia and Psychosis Guide

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), announced the launch of the Schizophrenia and Psychosis Lexicon Guide. Developed through collaboration between mental health experts and individuals with personal experiences, this guide aims to revolutionize the way schizophrenia and psychosis are discussed, understood, and managed. It strives to promote empathy, respect, and a more inclusive approach in mental health communications.

Dr. Teri Brister, NAMI's Chief Program Officer, highlighted the importance of using informed and thoughtful language to support individuals with schizophrenia and psychosis. This initiative is part of NAMI's ongoing efforts to enhance mental health outcomes and combat the stigma and discrimination associated with these conditions.

The guide, which can be accessed on NAMI’s website, is designed for healthcare professionals, caregivers, advocates, and media personnel. It respects the perspectives of those living with these conditions and furthers positive engagement. Dr. Ken Duckworth, NAMI's Chief Medical Officer, praised the guide for effectively conveying the language preferences of individuals with lived experiences, thus advancing accurate and empathetic communication within the field.
