Ørsted Invests in Battery Energy Storage System with Hornsea 3 Offshore Wind Farm

Ørsted has made a final investment decision to deploy a battery energy storage system at the Hornsea 3 Offshore Wind Farm site near Norwich, UK. The Tesla system will provide grid stability and reduce energy price volatility.

The storage system, with a capacity of 600 MWh and a 300 MW power rating, can supply energy to 80,000 UK homes. It will store excess energy generated during periods of high wind and sunshine for later use, balancing supply and demand and stabilizing prices during peak periods.

The UK remains a key market for Ørsted, boasting 12 operational offshore wind farms and a total of 660 MW of storage projects either operational or under construction. Completion of the battery system is expected by the end of 2026.

Duncan Clark, Head of UK & Ireland at Ørsted, stated that the battery will maximize the potential of renewable energy while providing increased energy security and value to consumers. Tesla’s Mike Snyder highlighted the flexibility and grid stability provided by Tesla’s electronics.
