Nordic Bond Market Approaches Record Year Amidst International Interest

The Nordic high yield bond market is on track for a potentially record-breaking year in 2026, maintaining strong performance through Q3. With primary issuance totaling €4.6 billion over 40 transactions, the quarter ranks as the second-best in history. Year-to-date volume aligns with 2025's record figures at €17.3 billion. Notably, international issuers comprised 60% of the market's volume. The sector displayed resilience, with Nordic high yield spreads tightening slightly, unlike broader markets that widened due to rising interest rates.

The summer months, traditionally slower, contributed significantly to the quarterly volume, as July and August garnered €2.7 billion, almost doubling last year's figures. Despite a dip in September's issuance at €2.0 billion compared to the €3.8 billion of the previous year, the market's execution strategy proved crucial. Non-Nordic issuers collected €10.4 billion this year, indicating continued growth in international participation alongside a shift in investor geography, with non-Nordic investors commanding 78% of the order volume.
