Piasecki Advances Hydrogen-Powered Urban Air Mobility

Piasecki Aircraft Corporation (PiAC) has successfully completed the first phase of a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) sponsored study exploring the feasibility of hydrogen fuel cell-powered Urban Air Mobility (UAM) vehicles. Initiated under the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program, this project underlines efforts to align urban transportation with future energy needs.

The study involved a technical economic analysis comparing traditional and innovative propulsion technologies using a baseline Robinson R44 helicopter. Through this analysis, it was found that hydrogen-powered and battery-powered variants could potentially reduce Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions significantly when compared to more traditional propulsion methods. In particular, the liquid hydrogen variant showed the best performance, matching the range of internal combustion models while requiring fewer refuelings.

The implication of these findings could be vital for urban mobility, offering reduced operating costs and lower GHG emissions. As the United States moves towards developing a more comprehensive hydrogen infrastructure, projects such as these demonstrate viable pathways for downsizing carbon footprints in transportation sectors.

Moreover, the study contributes to broader aviation and transportation sector goals, aligning with initiatives by the Biden-Harris administration to build a sustainable energy future. John Piasecki, President and CEO of Piasecki Aircraft, underscored the aircraft's potential to disrupt traditional markets and pave the way for zero-carbon urban air mobility solutions.
