Rockingham County Partners with Waga Energy for RNG Production Facility
Rockingham County has entered into a 20-year partnership with Waga Energy for the construction of a Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) production facility at the Rockingham County Landfill in Madison, NC. This facility, expected to launch in 2026, will employ Waga Energy's innovative WAGABOX® technology to transform landfill gas into high-quality RNG, injecting approximately 207,000 MMBtu of sustainable energy annually into the local natural gas pipeline.
The collaboration between Rockingham County and Waga Energy, following a public request for proposal process in late 2022, highlights a significant move towards sustainable energy solutions. The project anticipates reducing carbon emissions by about 13,500 tons of CO2 equivalent per year, aligning with environmental goals and supporting the community's energy needs sustainably.
Waga Energy's patented WAGABOX® technology integrates membrane filtration with cryogenic distillation, maximizing RNG production by adapting to varying landfill gas compositions. This project not only aids in local energy production but also supports the circular economy by converting waste to energy.
Lance Metzler, Rockingham County Manager, and Guénaël Prince, CEO of Waga Energy Inc. (USA), have expressed their commitment to this project, emphasizing its role in enhancing community sustainability and its economic benefits through new revenue streams for the county.
