SpiNNcloud Systems Launches SpiNNaker2 Neuromorphic Supercomputer

DRESDEN, GERMANY – SpiNNcloud Systems announced the release of the SpiNNaker2, a new supercomputer based on neuromorphic technology, which emulates the human brain's architecture. The announcement came just before the ISC High Performance 2024 conference. SpiNNaker2 is touted as a hybrid AI high-performance computing system, which integrates low-power processors to efficiently run AI workloads. This technology was developed from intellectual property that emerged from the Human Brain Project.

Customers such as Sandia National Laboratories, Technical University of München, and Universität Göttingen are among the first to place orders. SpiNNaker2 promises a significant advancement in terms of energy efficiency and computational power, offering 152 Arm-based cores per chip across 48 chips on each server board, capable of simulating up to 10 billion interconnected neurons.

The platform is designed to be scalable and cost-effective, intended for use in various sectors including defense and smart city applications. With its event-based communication and machine learning capabilities, SpiNNaker2 distinguishes itself by providing lower operational costs and versatility compared to traditional GPU solutions. SpiNNcloud Systems co-founder Hector Gonzalez emphasized the system’s role in advancing hybrid AI and addressing the need for power-efficient, high-performance computing solutions.
