SumUp Outlines Initiatives to Embrace Neurodiversity in Companies

Felizitas Lichtenberg, Global Head of Diversity & Inclusion, Wellbeing and Sustainability at SumUp, demonstrates the benefits of including neurodiverse individuals in workplaces. SumUp emphasizes that one out of seven people is estimated to have some form of neurodiversity, which brings various strengths and weaknesses to the table. A corporate culture that embraces neurodiversity can offer new perspectives, ideas, and skills, generating social impact.

The primary challenge today is awareness. Neurodivergent individuals often have unique thinking patterns and emotional experiences, which can add significant value to work teams. For instance, dyslexic individuals may possess remarkable verbal skills and creative mindsets. Hence, management should focus on each individual's skills.

Making talent searches inclusive is another challenge. The interview environment plays a crucial role, as noisy or high-sensory settings can distract candidates. Providing clear information about subsequent stages can alleviate uncertainty.

Training is essential for creating an inclusive environment. SumUp organizes workshops to raise awareness about neurodiversity. Additionally, accessible workspaces, such as the use of noise-canceling headsets, can support concentration.

SumUp also stresses the importance of accommodating office logistics, allowing flexibility, and supporting those who are struggling. It is crucial for organizations to ensure that the work environment suits each individual’s needs.
