Sunrise Wind Project Advances with Federal Approval and Final Investment Decision
Sunrise Wind has achieved a pivotal milestone by receiving the Record of Decision (RoD) from the US Department of the Interior's Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM), marking a significant step in the federal environmental review process for the offshore wind project destined to serve New York. This development, combined with the joint final investment decision from Ørsted and Eversource, underscores a strong commitment to the project's realization, leading to the commencement of vital onshore construction activities.
The project, once completed, is set to be the largest offshore wind farm in the United States, generating sufficient renewable energy to power nearly 600,000 New York homes. Located approximately 30 miles east of Montauk, New York, Sunrise Wind, with a capacity of 924 MW, will play a crucial role in assisting New York in meeting its mandate of achieving 70% renewable energy by 2030. The project is expected to bring significant economic benefits to New York, including a $700 million investment in Suffolk County and the creation of 800 direct jobs alongside numerous indirect employment opportunities in the state, projecting to be operational by 2026.
Leaders from both Ørsted and Eversource expressed their gratitude towards the Biden Administration, state partners, and congressional delegations for their support in advancing this critical project, signaling a shared vision for a sustainable energy future. The BOEM's issuance of the RoD concludes its National Environmental Policy Act review process, setting the stage for further approvals needed for the project's progression.
