Survivor Weekend: College Freshmen Build a Sense of Community

Hope Church Movement and the Campus Changer Network are once again hosting Survivor Weekend, a three-day adventure designed for college students. This year, over 2,000 students from 24 campuses in the Southwest will participate, competing in teams based on their college, major, or residence hall. The event features music, camping, and various competitions in Northern Arizona.

Survivor Weekend, open to students of all backgrounds, was founded by Pastor Brian and Wendy Smith, inspired by their own college experiences. According to Pastor Brian, the event addresses the widespread anxiety and need for belonging that freshmen often feel upon entering college.

Studies show that a sense of belonging can mitigate feelings of depression, loneliness, and social anxiety in college students. Universities have responded by creating roles like the Dean of Belonging to support students. Students often find lifelong friendships through Survivor Weekend, contributing to a positive college experience.

This year marks the first time students from Texas, specifically UT Austin and Texas State, will join Survivor Weekend. For more information, visit survivorwknd.com.
