U.S. DOE Approves Safety Design Strategy for Radiant Industries' Microreactor

Radiant Industries, Inc., based in El Segundo, California, announced that the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has approved the Safety Design Strategy (SDS) for its Kaleidos microreactor. This marks a significant step in the safety review process, conducted at the Idaho National Laboratory's National Reactor Innovation Center (NRIC) Demonstration of Microreactor Experiments (DOME) test bed.

The approved SDS outlines the safety analysis approach for the Kaleidos reactor. Radiant will use the DOME facility to gather essential safety and performance data, aiding the future licensing process with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). The next phase involves working on the Conceptual Safety Design Report (CSDR), summarizing hazard analyses and safety decisions.

CEO Doug Bernauer emphasized the importance of this milestone for future commercialization. NRIC's acting director, Brad Tomer, highlighted the commitment to developing advanced nuclear technologies for clean energy solutions.

Radiant expects to deliver the first pre-ordered Kaleidos units by 2028, post NRC licensing. The company is one of three recipients of DOE's Front-End Engineering and Experiment Design (FEEED) awards, assisting in testing a fueled prototype microreactor.
