Inauguration of Methane Pyrolysis Plant on V-ZUG Site in Zug
In November 2025, the Association for the Decarbonization of Industry (VzDI) and its partners inaugurated a methane pyrolysis plant at the V-ZUG production site in Zug, Switzerland. This cutting-edge facility is the product of collaboration between 16 industry leaders and Empa, with support from the Canton of Zug. The CHF 8 million investment signifies a key development toward achieving net-zero emissions for Swiss industry by 2050.
Methane pyrolysis allows methane to produce hydrogen and solid carbon without releasing CO2, mitigating its environmental impact. The plant is projected to save 240 tonnes of CO2 annually, while generating 10 kg of high-purity hydrogen per hour. This hydrogen will heat V-ZUG’s enamelling furnace, replacing fossil fuels and aiding in its decarbonization.
The project, led by VzDI, includes notable partners like Empa, Siemens, and Holcim. This collaboration highlights the importance of such innovations in steering industrial processes towards sustainability.
