EU Votes to Ban Monacolins from Red Yeast Rice

On May 13, EU Member States approved a draft regulation banning monacolins from red yeast rice. The regulation, expected to be published in October 2026, will go into effect 20 days later, with a transition period until October 2027 for existing products. This change follows safety concerns raised by the European Food Safety Authority in 2018, citing potential adverse effects at low intake levels.

For Valbiotis, a French company specializing in cardiometabolic health, this regulation supports its scientific approach to prevention. Valbiotis’ product, ValbiotisPRO® Cholesterol, is formulated without red yeast rice or monacolins, instead using Lipidrive®, a natural active ingredient. The regulation could boost Valbiotis' market presence and product portfolio, aligning with the company’s research-driven strategy.
