Veolia to Decarbonize Municipal Heat in London with Waste Energy
Veolia is constructing a new heating network in London, using energy from the SELCHP Energy Recovery Facility (ERF), in partnership with Southwark Council. The network will supply nearly 5,000 households with heat generated from non-recyclable waste.
By utilizing 75GWh of low carbon heat annually, the initiative aims to save 14,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions each year. The heat will have around 60% renewable content due to the biogenic component of the waste. The project will help reduce dependence on fossil fuels and contribute to the UK's decarbonization targets.
This new network builds on the existing one powered by SELCHP, which already serves 3,000 households. Veolia will oversee the design, construction, and operation of the network.
Heat will be supplied through a 7km insulated pipe network, distributed to connected buildings at up to 95°C. This will help advance carbon reductions for the London Borough of Southwark. The first-ever Local Development Order for such a network was approved by Southwark Council.
