ZCCM-IH Announces 300 MW Phase II Power Plant Project at Maamba Collieries Limited
ZCCM Investments Holdings Plc has announced that Maamba Collieries Limited (MCL) has secured financing for the construction of an additional 300 MW power plant. This project falls under Phase II of their power generation expansion.
MCL has signed a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement with ZESCO Limited, Zambia's national electricity utility, for the new plant. Established in 1971, MCL was privatized in 2010, with Nava Bharat Singapore Limited holding 65% of shares and ZCCM-IH holding 35%.
The Phase II project will replicate the initial 300 MW coal-fired power plant inaugurated in 2016. It will include two 150 MW generating units, with construction beginning in August 2024 and ending by July 2026. The project's estimated total cost is USD 400 million, with approximately USD 300 million financed by a debt consortium.
The new plant will integrate existing infrastructure, including transmission lines and coal preparation facilities. ZCCM-IH will provide further updates on the project's progress.
