Zekelman Supports CSPA's Efforts to Impose Tariffs on Chinese Steel

CHICAGO, IL / ACCESSWIRE / September 26, 2024 / Zekelman Industries, the largest independent steel pipe and tube manufacturer in North America, praised the Canadian Steel Producers Association (CSPA) for advocating tariffs on Chinese steel and aluminum imports. The company emphasized that these efforts protect Canadian workers, families, and communities from unfairly dumped, high-carbon imports.

"We call upon the Canadian government to enact these tariffs as quickly as possible because the livelihoods of our fellow countrymen depend on it," stated Barry Zekelman, CEO of Zekelman Industries. He stressed the need to prioritize the domestic economy and maintain trading relationships.

On August 26, the Canadian government announced a 25% surtax on steel and aluminum imports from China. The CSPA and the Aluminium Association of Canada (AAC) played a key role in this decision. Zekelman also urged Canada to align with its CUSMA partners, the United States and Mexico, to prevent unfairly traded imports via North America.
