Avergies, Valorizon and Waga Energy join forces to produce RNG in Southwestern France
Waga Energy Avergies, Valorizon and Waga Energy join forces to produce RNG in Southwestern France (Agen, France – December 12th 2024) - Avergies and Valorizon have chosen Waga Energy to produce Renewable Natural Gas at the Albié waste management site in Monflanquin, Lot-et-Garonne, France. Waga Energy (EPA: WAGA), a global expert in the production of Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) from landfills, has been selected by Valorizon and Avergies to upgrade biogas from the Albié Landfill in Monflanquin (Lot-et-Garonne region, Southwestern France). Valorizon, the Lot-et-Garonne waste management organization, and Avergies, a semi-public company mandated to develop renewable energy projects in the region, have set up the company Biogaz Monflanquin to manage the project. Waga Energy will install and operate a WAGABOX® unit on the site to upgrade the biogas released by landfilled waste into RNG, a renewable substitute for fossil natural gas. The RNG will be injected directly into the natural gas distribution network owned by Territoire d'Énergie Lot-et-Garonne and operated by GRDF, to supply homes and businesses of the Villeneuve-sur-Lot community. The WAGABOX® unit will produce around 41,000 MMBtu (12 GWh) of RNG per year on average, supplying around 3,000 local households. Scheduled for end-2025, its commissioning will avoid the emission of 2,400 tons of CO2 eq. into the atmosphere annually, by replacing fossil natural gas with RNG[1]. The Monflanquin site processes almost 30,000 metric tons of waste a year. Valorizon's teams are fully committed to optimizing biogas capture so that it can be efficiently upgraded by the WAGABOX® unit, contributing to the fight against climate change. Through this project, the Monflanquin Landfill will supply the area with clean, local, and renewable energy. RNG can also fuel truck fleets, as is already the case in the urban areas of Villeneuve-sur-Lot, Agen, and the Confluent and Coteaux de Prayssas Community of Communes, through a network of Témob stations. BioCNG (RNG used as Compressed Natural Gas for Vehicles) is the most mature, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly solution for decarbonizing heavy-duty transportation. “The partnership with Waga Energy is a real step forward for our project and for the region. Thanks to its cutting-edge technology, responsiveness and recognized expertise, we were able to design an innovative and sustainable solution. The project represents not only a profitable economic opportunity, but also a contribution to the local energy transition. Once again, we are proud to be able to implement an environmentally-friendly approach to supply locally-produced green gas for the benefit of the inhabitants and businesses of Lot-et-Garonne.” stated Pascal de Sermet, Chairman and CEO of SEM Avergies. “This project marks an important stage in the development of the Albié Landfill, with the aim of improving the quality of treatment and the environmental footprint of our activity, while reducing pollution by better capturing gas emissions. The partnership with Avergies enables Valorizon to make this investment with limited impact on the organization investment budget, while at the same time benefiting from part of the future revenue from biogas upgrade.” added Ludovic Biasotto, Chairman of Valorizon. “We are delighted to be working with Valorizon and Avergies, local players committed to renewable energy. With this new project, we are working together to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and combat global warming. Thanks to the commitment of our partners and the WAGABOX® technology, the Monflanquin Landfill has become a RNG producer, supplying the region with local, low-carbon energy.” confirms Mathieu Lefebvre, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Waga Energy. About SAS Biogaz Monflanquin Founded in August 2023 by VALORIZON and AVERGIES, SAS Biogaz Monflanquin manages an ambitious project to upgrade the biogas produced at the Monflanquin site. Led by local elected representatives, the two organizations have pooled their expertise to meet the challenges of the energy transition. About Avergies Created in 2019 by Territoire d'Energie 47, the semi-public company AVERGIES accompanies investments in energy transition in the Lot-et-Garonne region and initiates or participates in projects to develop sustainable resources. AVERGIES' mission is to invest in the development of all types of renewable energies, mainly solar photovoltaic, biogas and renewable energy distribution stations for mobility. About ValOrizon ValOrizon, the Lot-et-Garonne waste management organization, is the “syndicat mixte départemental” responsible for the treatment and recovery of household and similar waste in Lot-et-Garonne French area. It currently has a population of 235,000, spread over two communities of agglomerations, six communities of communes and a mixed syndicate. Its missions: to recover, reduce and raise awareness. ValOrizon treats all waste by sorting, composting and, as a last resort, landfilling. The syndicate is committed to a policy of waste prevention, and supports reuse, repair and recycling initiatives to promote the circular economy. ValOrizon manages several facilities throughout the department: the Monflanquin Landfill, two transfer stations and a composting platform. ValOrizon has signed a contract with Paprec to operate the Damazan sorting center, which receives selective collections from all over the department. About Waga Energy Waga Energy (EPA: WAGA) produces competitively priced Renewable Natural Gas (RNG, also known as “biomethane”) by upgrading landfill gas using a patented purification technology called WAGABOX®. The RNG produced is injected directly into the gas distribution networks that supply individuals and businesses, providing a substitute for fossil natural gas. Waga Energy operates 28 RNG production units in France, Spain, Canada and the USA, representing an installed capacity of more than 1 TWh per year (3,412,960 MMBtu). Each project initiated by WagaEnergy contributes to the fight against global warming and helps the energy transition.Waga Energy employs 250 people. The 2023 consolidated revenue was 33.3m€.
