SECCRA Selects Waga Energy to produce RNG in Pennsylvania

Philadelphia (PA), December 18th, 2024 – Southeastern Chester County Refuse Authority (SECCRA) selects Waga Energy to produce Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) on the SECCRA Community Landfill located in West Grove (PA).

SECCRA, a municipal authority in charge of waste management in southern Chester County, and Waga Energy (EPA:WAGA), a global expert in the production of Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) from landfills, has signed a 20-year agreement to produce RNG at SECCRA Community Landfill in West Grove, PA. Under this agreement, Waga Energy will finance, build, own, and operate an RNG production facility using its patented WAGABOX® technology on the site. This WAGABOX® unit is the second in Chester County, highlighting Waga Energy’s commitment to RNG in the community. A WAGABOX® unit is under construction at the Landcaster Landfill.

Once commissioned in 2026, the WAGABOX® facility will inject 229,000 MMBtu (67 GWh) of RNG per year into the local natural gas network. This represents enough energy to heat approximately 4,300 homes annually. The RNG produced will offset approximately 15,000 tons of CO2 equivalent emissions per year[1]. A key pillar for the energy transition, RNG is a local and renewable energy that can substitute fossil-based fuels in transportation, industry, and heating.

SECCRA serves 24 boroughs and townships in southern Chester County. The SECCRA Community Landfill collects waste from a community consisting of 105,000 people and it accepts close to 150,000 tons of waste annually. The implementation of a WAGABOX® RNG facility further exemplifies SECCRAs long-term commitment to the community served by the landfill.

As a result of 15 years of development, Waga Energy’s patented WAGABOX® technology revolutionizes landfill gas upgrading by combining membrane filtration with cryogenic distillation. It maximizes the renewable energy production of landfills by ensuring the production of pipeline-quality RNG, regardless of landfill gas variations in flow rate and composition. The SECCRA Community Landfill WAGABOX® facility will be Waga Energy’s third project in Pennsylvania.

Scott Mengle, SECCRA General Manager, said: “SECCRA has long been a pioneer in landfill gas-to-energy initiatives, earning recognition from the EPA with the Project of the Year Award in 2007 for turning landfill gas into electricity."

Andrew Mazzeo, Chairman SECCRA Board of Directors, said: “This new agreement with Waga Energy represents the next chapter in our commitment to sustainability. By upgrading landfill gas to pipeline-quality standards for distribution, we are advancing our environmental stewardship while creating value for our community."

Guénaël Prince, CEO of Waga Energy Inc., USA., said: “We are extremely proud to install our innovative technology on SECCRA’s site to develop the third WAGABOX® unit in Pennsylvania, and the 13th in the USA.  We are inspired by SECCRA’s commitment to their community and their dedication to supporting this project and realizing the environmental benefits of it. We look forward to this 20-year partnership, which will create local energy and financial returns for the SECCRA Community Landfill and those it serves.”
